My third weekend in Malaysia was coming and celebration of Chinese New Year around Asia and probably the whole world. Fast decision – Melaka, a charming city with trading history and multicultural heritage, just 2 hours away from Kuala Lumpur.
But those 2 hours do make a difference.
At first, people and their attitude towards others – you could smiled faces all around, people who want to and who have the time to talk with you, to get to know you and your story. It was amazing feeling to be surrounded by all the persons with this positive energy inside.
What comes next, is the city itself – rich with history and beautiful places by the riverside, full of nyonya (mix of Chinese and Malay) restaurants, Malay-Portuguese cuisine, as well as Indian, Chinese and Muslim. You can easily get there Portuguese egg tart enjoying the beauty of Melaka River from one of the small bridges. Yes, you could easily recognise Portuguese influence in the city. There are many catholic churches around the city, but what I found even more surprising was to see Indian, Muslim and Chinese temples next to each other.
Melaka is the city of peace for me. Last not least, you know you spend truly valuable time there, recharging your batteries, being surrounded by the beauty. Beautiful people, so diverse, mix of so many cultures, influences, where Europe and Asia meet, where the art flourishes, where people drive the bikes.
This is the place where you can explore living in completely different way from any metropolitan city.
Melaka allows you to truly experience it’s multicultural environment, being surrounded by art and greeted by smiled people.
It was there where by entering Titi Art Gallery, I had the chance to explore the beauty of Chinese Modern Art in Malaysia. I felt so welcome there, with Titi Kwok Yong Chee, the artist and the owner of the gallery, giving us mandarines for happy new year and providing us with the information on his art. He has also explained us the tradition of Chinese New Year, so that we could later experience it in the temple.
In the holy site, no matter if you are a believer or not, you can experience beautiful feelings.
As I have never been in Chinese temple before, I just let myself go with the flow and follow others. I prayed for my dreams and I get my fortune. It seems another year full of beautiful moments is coming.
Because in the end this us who create and our own experiences. Gong Xi Fa Cai (Happy New Year!)
